The Lizard’s new Tamar class all-weather lifeboat Rose
arrived on station on Sunday 10th July 2011.
The Tamar is the newest class of ALB in the RNLI fleet. Designed to be launched from a slipway, the Tamar can also lie afloat. A computerised Systems and Information Management System (SIMS) is installed so many of the onboard controls for navigating and controlling the lifeboat can be managed remotely and the crew can remain in their seats for longer, further improving their safety. |

The Lizard lifeboat station was founded in 1859 and was originally sited at Polpeor, Lizard Point. In 1959 the station moved to its present location in Kilcobben Cove and after 50 years service is currently being rebuilt to house the new Tamar class lifeboat. It is due for completion later this year.
At a cost of £7.4m the new station is located 140 foot down over the cliff, is almost double the size of the old station and is accessed by almost 200 steps. |
Forthcoming Events
The running costs of the RNLI are £145.4m annually,
the annual running costs of an all-weather lifeboat station, like The Lizard is on average £225,000, to train one lifeboat crew member costs £1214. Because of these costs it is important that fundraising is carried out locally. The Lizard, Coverack, Helston and Porthleven lifeboat branches hold a number of fundraising events each year. The appeal for The Lizard’s new Tamar class all-weather lifeboat was launched in the summer of 2009 by the now retired Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow. During the nationwide Appeal of £1.8 million, our local target of £300,000 was exceeded in little over two years, an amazing achievement in such difficult times. The fundraising response from individuals, businesses and organisations both locally and nationally was outstanding and we cannot thank everyone enough.
